The US is NOT a Christian Nation

 Someone I know posted this cacophony of utter bullshit today: 

I choose believing in a forgiving God, who loves and is there for repentant sinners as well as those who faithfully follow the Bible’s teachings.
Many other religions that are coming or are already in our country believe in beheading, mutilation, or other violent death or punishment to those not following that religion’s “rules”.
God bless America!

Someone told me you have to choose which hill you die on: Get ready to fill out your reports on me, cause I'm going to vent here. Frankly I expect some "unfriending" to happen and that is fine too.
I believe we all have the right to worship as we please, but I also know that our country, the United States of America, was founded on Christian principles. I believe we should be proud of our country. A quote is a quote. It should not be amended or watered down. The news media should not be afraid to use the "Love of Christ" part. Why they state, “Because, using the words Christ or God might offend someone!” Well, now it's my turn to be offended!
I'm offended that the news media would edit it out.
Offended that Christians are being asked to tread lightly, so as not to offend someone of another religion. This man, Jesus, loved God, loved his people, loved the world, and gave his life for the sins of all people. Those who believe in Him, and accept Him as their personal Savior, will have everlasting life !!!
This Founding Principle is actually embedded in our Declaration of Independence: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.”
I hope every Christian or every person that believes in God who is OFFENDED will copy this and paste it to their status.....“If we ever forget that we're one nation under GOD, then we will be a nation gone under.” ~Ronald Reagan.
*Before you say it, I already know that a lot of you will say I don't know how to copy & paste.* It’s easy... hold your finger on this post when the word copy appears, just touch it, then go to your home page and where it says "what's on your mind", touch it and hold your finger where you would start writing your comment and "paste”.

 Grammatical errors aside, there is sooo much wrong in this statement that I'm flabbergasted.  Perhaps I should not be.  But let's look at this point by point and truly determine what is being said and what is completely off base.

We'll start with this gem:

First of all, America is not a religion, so this makes no sense.  Let's not forget that the Crusades did indeed exist and many of the Christians here in the US have ancestors who brutally killed in the name of Christianity.  Christianity is not a blood free religion at all. 

Then let's move on to this one:

I believe we all have the right to worship as we please, but I also know that our country, the United States of America, was founded on Christian principles

What did the founding fathers have to say about religion?  Let's see:

Thomas Jefferson:  "Christianity neither is, nor ever was a part of the common law."


James Madison:  "
Religious bondage shackles and debilitates the mind and unfits it for every noble enterprise.... During almost fifteen centuries has the legal establishment of Christianity been on trial. What have been its fruits? More or less, in all places, pride and indolence in the clergy; ignorance and servility in laity; in both, superstition, bigotry, and persecution."

George Washington:  "The United States of America should have a foundation free from the influence of clergy."

Benjamin Franklin:  "Lighthouses are more helpful than churches."

There are many more.  The United State was not founded on Christian Principles, in fact, quite the opposite.  

Now on to the statement:

This is in reference to an interview Matt Lauer on NBC did with a Navy Seal Widow who was killed in Afghanistan.  Every credible source I can find says that this is false.  Reference a Snopes Article, and I would be happy to point out other sources, even some conservative ones:  https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/nbc-vaughn/.    This is purely Christians getting their panties in a twist over a false Fox News narrative. 

Now we have this truly fun statement:

I've already quoted the founding fathers on their views on religion, but let's look at what the Declaration of Independence says.  I mean it's quoted right there:  "that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator". Clearly, since the phrasing is not THE Creator, the founding fathers are saying in whichever Creator someone chooses to believe. Oh and the whole Ronald Regan and the "Under God" thing - yeah that was added in 1957 - yes you read that correctly - 1957 to our currency and to the pledge in 1954 - as a way during the Cold War to distinguish between the distinctly atheist USSR and the USA. Now look, I fully believe in freedom of religion, and I applaud you if worshiping in the Christian sense brings you peace and happiness. I truly do. But spouting utter nonsense because it meets your narrative is wrong. Always wrong. Let's do better.
